Dinaric Arc Sustainable Hydropower Initiative

The aim of the project is ensuring the conservation of priority habitats (Skadar Lake, the Neretva River and the Cetina River) in the Dinaric Arc and to preserve them from destruction within the hydropower development which requires a dynamic engagement and active advocating for sustainable water management in the Dinaric Arc.

The vision of the project is to mitigate the development of hydropower plants as the one of the biggest threat to freshwater ecosystems in the Dinaric Arc, so the most important habitats in the priority basins are preserved and sustainable of hydropower plants is recognized as a feasible practice in the region.

Within project we will observe not only to major projects in preparation or development, but also we will try to influence the way water managers make decisions, investors make investments and representatives of civil society in the decision making process.

Project is aimed to targets national decision makers, in order to increase their understanding of needs for establishing more sustainable criteria when conceiving and approving hydropower projects and provide them with tools that support their decision-making process. Beside this we intend to involve the civil society and increase the capacity of national, local NGOs to become active participants in decision-making process concerning the construction of infrastructure facilities in river flows.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with WWF MedPO from Rome - Italy, with support of MAVA foundation.
