NGO Green Home organized a workshop for representatives of the civil sector, students and activists on the topic of air pollution in the municipalities of Bijelo Polje, Nik\u0161i\u0107, Pljevlja and Podgorica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness and strengthen the capacity of organizations and activists in addressing the impact of climate change and air pollution on the quality of life in these municipalities, explains Azra Vukovi\u0107, director of the NGO Green Home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“During the workshop, we focused on the connection between climate change and air pollution and human health, the main sources of pollution and air pollution monitoring. We tried to identify entry points for reducing air pollution at the local level, and of course our goal is to strengthen the participation of women and young people in decision-making processes related to climate change and air pollution”, says Vukovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vukovi\u0107 points out that the goal is for citizens to become familiar with what the Environmental Protection Agency does and how and in what way they can monitor the state of air pollution through publicly available data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gordana \u0110ukanovi\u0107 from the Environmental Protection Agency pointed out that in addition to clarifying the interpretation of data on air pollution, they talked about data from measuring stations that show increased pollution during the winter months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The data show that during the winter months we have very polluted air in the northern region, while in the spring and summer months, if there are no accidents, then the air quality in all of Montenegro is very good,” says \u0110ukanovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She points out that the situation that was recorded yesterday in Montenegro with the fall of the so-called dirty rains is not alarming and represents a natural source of pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Organization for European Security and Cooperation (OSCE), as a regional organization that includes 57 member states, recognizes the importance of environmental protection and safety, said the representative of this organization, Bernd Burwitz. He recalled that in December 2021, the OSCE adopted a ministerial decision on strengthening cooperation in solving the challenges caused by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Air pollution is a challenge shared by the whole of Southeast Europe, with a significant impact on health and, at the same time, a potential for cooperation, as joint efforts are likely to yield more results. Coal-fired power plants, industry, residential heating, traffic, agriculture and uncontrolled burning of waste are the main sources of particles and other air emissions in the region”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burwitz points out that according to the European Environment Agency, air pollution is the biggest risk to environmental health in Europe and the main cause of premature death and disease. In addition, poor air quality can threaten agriculture, forestry and ecosystems, thereby increasing the insecurity of livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Solving the problem of air pollution in Southeast Europe is also an opportunity to achieve progress in solving gender challenges in the region. Health risks are generally strongly correlated with gender, especially in low-income households. Women, who are often responsible for household chores, are more likely to be affected by indoor pollution. “Children are particularly sensitive to poor air quality because pollutants can have a lasting impact on their development, and the impacts begin before birth,” Burwitz pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The workshop is part of the project “Raising awareness of the impact of heating on air pollution, climate change and health” which is financially supported by the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
