Today in Podgorica, NGO Green Home, in cooperation with MedWaves, successfully organized a national conference within the “Low Plastic Zone” (LPZ) initiative.
The event brought together representatives of the HORECA sector, relevant institutions, international organizations, and NGOs to exchange experiences and practical solutions for reducing the use of single-use plastics in business operations.
The LPZ initiative aims to motivate companies in the HORECA sector—especially hotels—to apply measures for reducing and preventing the use of single-use products. The project represents a continuation of previous regional activities carried out in recent years, which have contributed to the reduction of plastic waste in selected municipalities in Montenegro, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During the introductory part of the workshop, participants had the opportunity to learn about global and local challenges related to plastic pollution, as well as the importance of effective waste management in the tourism and hospitality sector. The Low Plastic Zone Initiative was presented, including its methodology and results achieved so far, with a particular focus on challenges in plastic waste management in Montenegro.
The central part of the conference focused on concrete approaches to reducing and eliminating single-use plastic products in the HORECA sector. The results of the LPZ initiative in Montenegro were presented, along with the process of developing implementation plans for measures in hotels. The conference was especially enriched by practical examples, including case studies demonstrating how certain hotels are already successfully reducing single-use plastic consumption and transitioning to more sustainable alternatives.
The results of the initiative clearly showed that hotels in Montenegro demonstrate strong potential and commitment to reducing waste generated from single-use plastic products. However, achieving significant success in reducing plastic pollution also requires strong support from the state.
The conference also featured the premiere screening of a short film created as part of the project, showcasing some of the experiences of hotels participating in the Low Plastic Zone in Montenegro.
The workshop was organized by NGO Green Home and MedWaves, and the project was financially supported through the French Voluntary Contribution (FVC), within activities aimed at implementing and expanding policies for the reduction and prevention of plastic use.
