Low plastic zone initiative 2025

Low plastic zone initiative 2025

The project aims to engage businesses from the HORECA sector – particularly hotels – in Montenegro to effectively reduce their consumption of disposable Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) by implementing tailored reduction and prevention measures. This initiative builds on a previous project, which concluded in 2023, that supported selected municipalities in Montenegro, Albania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in reducing waste generated from disposable SUPs through the implementation of two interlinked and complementary approaches: the Low Plastic Zone (LPZ) and Green Procurement (GP) initiatives.
SUPs are items intended for single use before being discarded or recycled. These include plastic bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and toiletries – products commonly used by hotels, restaurants, cafés, and bars. Once used, SUPs pose significant waste management challenges and contribute to littering, often ending up in rivers and the sea, where they release toxic chemicals as they break down.
This project is supported by a French Voluntary Contribution (FVC) to MedWaves, the UNEP/MAP Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production, in the framework of activity 1.1.3: Implement and scale up a robust policy framework to reduce and prevent plastic use.
