Removal of abandoned fishing nets from the marine environment in the “Katič” and “Platamuni” Nature Parks

Through the project “Removal of abandoned fishing nets from the marine environment in the area of the Katič and Platamuni Nature Parks”, we contribute to reducing the negative impact of abandoned and lost fishing gear on the marine ecosystem and biodiversity.

Project activities include diving inspections, identification and documentation of abandoned fishing nets, as well as their safe removal from the marine environment. During the field activities, the locations of the found networks will be recorded, along with the collection of GPS coordinates, photo and video documentation and data on the condition found.

A special focus will be on the careful removal of identified nets with the use of appropriate diving and technical equipment, in order to minimize their impact on benthic communities and other organisms of the seabed.

The activities will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, diving inspections will be conducted at one location each in the Nature Park “Katič” and the Nature Park “Platamuni”, with the aim of identifying and recording lost, discarded or abandoned fishing nets. The second phase involves the removal of identified nets from the marine environment.

In addition to waste removal, the project will enable better recording of the state of the marine area and the creation of a documentation basis for future activities of protection and preservation of marine biodiversity.

The project is implemented in cooperation with the Public Enterprise for the Management of the Marine Assets of Montenegro, with the aim of contributing to the preservation of the marine ecosystem and the improvement of waste management in protected marine areas.

If you have information about the locations of abandoned or lost fishing nets in the area of the “Katič” and “Platamuni” Nature Parks, you can share them with us via the e-mail address: greenhome@greenhome.co.me. Your information may be of importance in planning future activities to remove abandoned fishing gear.
