NGO Green Home, in collaboration with partners NGO Wildlife Montenegro and PPNEA from Albania, has started the implementation of the project “Improvement of the status of otter (Lutra lutra) and its habitat in the cross-border area of Lake Skadar.”
On this occasion, a meeting was held today with representatives of the National Parks of Montenegro, and cooperation and support were agreed upon for the realization of this important project.
Lutra lutra (otter) is a semi-aquatic carnivorous mammal that is easily recognizable. According to the IUCN, this species has an NT (near threatened) status with a continuous decline in mature individuals.
This project will contribute to more comprehensive data on the presence and population estimates of otters, the closure of the open case Montenegro has under the Secretariat of the Bern Convention, and increase the knowledge and involvement of local citizens in the protection and improvement of the status of otters in Lake Skadar National Park on a cross-border level.
The funding for this project is provided by the European Union through the BestBelt project.
