Workshop on marine litter held in Ulcinj

DOO Komunalne djelatnosti Ulcinj and NGO Green Home conducted a workshop on raising awareness about plastic waste in the seas, with a focus on fishing nets and fishing gear, on Thursday (30.01.2025) in Ulcinj.

This is the second in a series of planned workshops aimed at raising awareness and educating citizens, especially fishermen, about the issue of managing old fishing nets and plastic waste in general. Representatives of fishing associations, non-governmental organizations, and institutions dealing with waste management attended the workshop and discussed possibilities for improving the management of this type of waste in the Municipality of Ulcinj.

As part of the project, containers for disposing of plastic waste, focusing on plastic waste from nets, will be placed at five locations in the city.

Fishing equipment, including fishing nets in the seas, can persist for hundreds of years, posing a threat to marine life, habitats, coastal communities, and our health during that time.

The workshop was held as part of the MARICIES (Marine Awareness, Recycling, and Innovation through Community Engagement and Solutions) project, which aims to prevent the creation of marine litter by improving the management system of obsolete fishing nets in the Municipality of Ulcinj, contributing to better collection of waste nets, including integrating them into the circular economy system and analyzing the possibilities for producing new items from that material.

The MARICIES project indirectly received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation action program through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, issued and implemented within the REMEDIES project.
