Say NO to plastic bags!

According to Eurostat data, the consumption of thin plastic carrier bags under 50 micrometers in the European Union has significantly decreased. In 2023, the average consumption per person was about 65 bags, representing a 31% decrease compared to 2018, when the average was 95 bags per person. These figures show that it is possible to achieve a significant reduction in plastic bag use through the implementation of appropriate measures.

In Montenegro, despite numerous civil society initiatives and legal measures aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastic bags, their consumption is still significant. However, there are no precise data on the number of bags per capita, nor comparative statistics.

On the other hand, reusable alternatives such as tote bags are widely available and practical. The market offers tote bags made of cotton, jute, polyester, recycled materials, and various designs. One tote bag can be used hundreds of times, significantly reducing the overall amount of waste and resources used for packaging. In addition, there are mesh bags for packaging fruits and vegetables, which are durable and easy to use.

The essence of moving away from plastic bag use lies in changing personal habits. It is enough to develop the habit of carrying a foldable tote bag, which today takes up very little space and is very easy to use. Every decision to say “NO” to a plastic bag directly contributes to reducing waste, pollution, and protecting the environment.

One small habit, such as carrying a reusable tote bag, can have a major positive environmental impact: less waste, cleaner coastlines, and a healthier environment.

Take a tote bag. Say NO to plastic bags!
